​Dancing with October

​​As October paints the world in amber and gold, we find ourselves in a natural period of change.

Like the leaves that spiral from branches to earth, this month invites us to explore the art of letting go through movement. The 5Rhythms practice offers us a perfect framework to dance with October's energy as nature demonstrates each rhythm in her autumn dance.

1. FLOWING: The Wisdom of Falling Leaves

Begin your movement by imagining a falling leaf. Notice its unhurried descent, the way it surrenders to the air currents, sometimes spiraling, sometimes gliding. This is flowing in its purest form – the art of yielding to gravity. Let your movement begin from the feet, connecting with the earth. Like roots drawing energy upward, let your dance emerge organically. Move in circles, exploring the ground beneath you.

What needs to root? What needs to be released?

  • Movement Suggestion: Start with slow, fluid movements close to the ground. Let your arms float like leaves, following their natural weight. Circle your wrists, elbows, shoulders – whatever wants to move.

2. STACCATO: The Crisp October Wind

As autumn winds pick up, they bring a different quality – sharp, decisive, and clear. This is staccato energy, expressed in the sudden gusts that scatter leaves and clear branches. In your dance, let your flowing movements find edges and angles.

Make clear choices, and cut clean lines through space.

  • Movement Suggestion: Experiment with stop-and-start movements. Push your hands through space as if against the October wind. Make sharp angles with your elbows, and let your feet strike the ground purposefully.

3. CHAOS: The Wild Dance of Change

October teaches us about chaos through its wild storms, swirling leaves, and rapid temperature changes. In 5Rhythms, chaos reminds us that surrender doesn't mean collapse—it means finding freedom within the wild unknown.

Let your movement become less controlled and more abandoned.

  • Movement Suggestion: Shake out your hands, arms, and whole body. Let your head move freely (keeping your neck relaxed). Dance with the abandonment of leaves in a whirlwind.

4. LYRICAL: The Light Through Changing Leaves

October light has a special quality as it filters through turning leaves—playful, golden, and magical. This is lyrical energy, where effort transforms into effortlessness.

After moving through chaos, find this lightness in your dance.

  • Movement Suggestion: Imagine your body filled with autumn light. Let your movements become lighter and more playful. Dance with the joy of a leaf catching sunlight.

5. STILLNESS: The Heart of Harvest

​October culminates in the stillness of harvest, in the quiet moments when summer's energy has been gathered and winter's rest approaches.

Let all the previous rhythms settle into a moving stillness in your dance.

  • Movement Suggestion: Slow your movement until you find the stillness within it. Stand like a tree in autumn, barely swaying. What harvest do you gather from your dance?

October reminds us that transformation is not always gentle, but it is always natural. Through 5Rhythms, we learn to move with energy rather than against it. As you practice dancing this month, let October be your teacher. Notice how the natural world embodies each rhythm. Dance with the season's invitation to release what no longer serves, to harvest what nourishes, and to find beauty in the process of letting go.

Remember, like the cycles of nature, your dance practice doesn't need to be perfect – it needs to be authentic. Move with what's true for you in this moment, in this season of change. Let October's energy guide your dance, and discover what wisdom emerges when you permit yourself to move with nature's rhythms.
