Who We Are

Syzygy Dance Project (SDP) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that transforms lives through dance. Founded in 2010, SDP started with a single class at the San Francisco County Jail and has since expanded its reach globally. SDP offers mindful movement and dance classes to diverse populations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and worldwide.

To make all this dancing happen, Syzygy Dance Project relies on the generous support of a diverse, global community. The team comprises dancers who are also therapists, MFT interns, IT consultants, businesspeople, 5Rhythms teachers, and more.

What brings us together is our passion for the transformative power of dance and the vision of Syzygy Dance Project. We currently have ongoing volunteers who dedicate their minds, skills, time, heart, energy, and financial resources. We create experiences where everyone contributes to making this world a better place through dance.

We believe that everyone can dance –
from the able-bodied to people in wheelchairs, in hospitals, and under other constraining circumstances.
We dance with different populations using music, sound, and movement to facilitate awareness, self-exploration, and change.

Syzygy Dance Project Board of Directors

The SDP board comprises dancers, teachers, choreographers, counselors, therapists, consultants, and business professionals. Board members believe in the transformative power of dance.

The Syzygy Dance Project Practice

We are a trauma-informed, community-based movement practice inspired by the work of Gabrielle Roth.

Syzygy Dance Project (SDP) classes cultivate a felt sense of freedom in the body and empower participants as creative agents in their own lives. The body holds stories, emotions, and tensions—often beyond conscious awareness. Through shared movement, participants begin to recognize and shift the patterns that limit them.

Rather than teaching set forms or choreography, SDP facilitators, experienced dancers, teachers, and somatic practitioners guide participants through creative movement explorations. These practices deepen awareness of bodily sensations, emotions, and thought patterns, expanding each person’s capacity for self-inquiry and expression.

What is discovered on the dance floor extends into daily life. Participants practice moving with authenticity, relating more openly to others, and responding to experience with greater flexibility and presence. Many report reduced stress, increased physical vitality, and a stronger sense of connection to themselves, to others, and to community.

These embodied skills support more grounded, responsive engagement with life’s challenges and choices.
