Syzygy (pronounced SIZ-uh-jee) is an astronomical term for the nearly straight-line alignment of three

or more celestial bodies. It comes from the Greek syzygos, meaning "yoked together." When bodies fall into syzygy, their forces don't merely coexist; they act in concert.
The most familiar expression of syzygy is tidal. At new and full moon, the Sun and Moon align in syzygy; their gravitational pulls reinforce one another, drawing the oceans higher and lower than at any other time. Spring tides, they're called for the Old English springan: to leap, to surge.
In our practice, syzygy speaks to something equally essential: the alignment of body, mind, and spirit. Three forces moving into a single line, amplifying what each alone cannot produce.
Celestial events are an invitation to align our own energies with the forces of the universe. Research has begun to examine the synchrony between lunar orbital cycles and our mood cycles, lending support to the idea that the cosmos does not merely surround us; it may entrain us, drawing us into its rhythms, the way the moon draws the tide.
Being present during syzygy, noticing it, and moving within it helps us feel the thread that runs between ourselves and the wider natural world.
The 5Rhythms practice of Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, and Stillness moves through the body's full spectrum, dissolving the distance between what we think, what we feel, and how we move. Each rhythm loosens a different layer of holding: Flowing reconnects us to sensation and groundedness; Staccato gives shape and voice to impulse; Chaos surrenders the controlling mind; Lyrical lifts the spirit into play; Stillness allows everything to settle.
When we dance through all five, something in us comes into alignment the way three celestial bodies fall into a line. The mind stops managing the body. The spirit stops waiting for permission. Body, mind, and spirit move as one. That is what syzygy feels like from the inside.
In the dance, we find what the planets practice across the dark: the quiet power of being in line with something larger than any one of us.
3 upcoming planetary alignment "syzygy" events:
Jun 12, 2026: Mini Syzygy - 3 planets. Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus are visible in the evening.
Aug 12, 2026: Large Syzygy - 6 planets. Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, Uranus, Saturn, Neptune in the morning.
Nov 14, 2026: Small Syzygy - 4 planets. Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Jupiter in the morning.
