We dance for laughter, we dance for tears, we dance for madness, we dance for fears, we dance for hopes, we dance for screams, we are the dancers, and we create the dreams. - Albert Einstein In the last 12 years of teaching movement to the outreach population, Syzygy Dance Project has been helping people access emotions they did not know how to express. A counselor in the Dublin Correctional Facility who witnessed one of Sylvie Minot's classes said: “The inmate expressed more emotions in the movement class than she has in our six months of counseling work together.” The work of the Syzygy Dance Project is not just to help people express their emotions but also to transform them. In Sylvie Minot's intensive 4-day Outreach Facilitator Training, participants explore how dance and movement can be used as a powerful resource and tool in working with specific outreach populations (i.e., in jails, recovery centers, hospitals, elder care facilities, and schools). This work is a dynamic movement practice of being in the body that can catalyze deep healing, connection, and creative expression. During this training, attendees begin in their bodies, learning movement exercises and how to support body movement and energetic attunement with others. We practice regulating and re-grounding ourselves while leading a group, integrating voice with authentic movement, and exploring confident leadership. We also discuss specific outreach populations and the challenge of bringing movement classes to groups resistant to or less comfortable with the movement.
