This summer, I am participating in spiritual theologian and eco-justice champion Matthew Fox's course on Catholic Saint Hildegard von Bingen. Author and mystic Mirabai Starr was a recent guest who shared the words of one of Hildegard's sacred chants. I have been captivated by it ever since. Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) was a "first woman" in many fields. At a time when few women wrote, Hildegard produced major works of theology and visionary writings. She used the curative powers of natural objects for healing, and wrote treatises about natural history and medicinal uses of plants, animals, trees and stones. She is the first composer whose biography is known. (Fordham.edu) Symphonia Armonie Celestium Revelationum by Hildegard von Bingen O Beloved, your way of knowing is amazing! The way you recognize every creature even before it appears The way you gaze into the face of every human being and see all your works gazing back at you O, what a miracle to be awake inside your breathing. Her final sentence calls out to me to sit with it. I want to invite you to explore her words this week while you go about your daily life, softly chanting with your breath ... "O, what a miracle to be awake inside your breathing." With Love, Sylvie and the SDP Team SDP SUMMER ANNOUNCEMENTS
