I've been thinking about breath this week and how this life force works without thought, action, and, all too often, awareness. Except maybe during the past year. As masks became our new facial accessory, breath seemed to connect with our consciousness in a new and often unsettling way. Under this new association, we experienced our own breath cupped within a cloth, the breaths distributed with words and song by those nearby, and breath as a beacon of a beloved's current state of health. No wonder many of us lost our connection with breath as a calming, nurturing, and supportive friend. In tonight's movement class, I want to take us back to focusing on our nurturing breath and space between. I want to return us to the breath of expansive awareness, love, peace, and the wholeness within. Poet, Danna Faulds, wrote this about breath: "Despite illness of body or mind, in spite of blinding despair or habitual belief, who you are is whole. Let nothing keep you separate from the truth. The soul, illumined from within, longs to be known for what it is. Undying, untouched by fire or the storms of life, there is a place inside where stillness and abiding peace reside. You can ride the breath to go there. Despite doubt or hopeless turns of mind, you are not broken. Spirit surrounds, embraces, fills you from the inside out. Release everything that isn't your true nature. What's left, the fullness, light and shadow, claim all that as your birthright." Come join my sweat your prayers class, where I'll guide us through breath in the interlude and reconnect us with the true nature of our breath. With love, Tina, Sylvie, and the SDP Team PS. No dance experience needed! Beginners are always welcome. Come join us! You don't have to attend via video--you can choose to listen to the class on your Smartphone. ABOUT SYZYGY DANCE PROJECT'S 5RHYTHMS CLASSIn Syzygy Dance Project's weekly online 5Rhythms class, you will be led on a journey of self-discovery as you join others in community. The class is made up of two waves. The first wave is your time to arrive, let go of your day and settle into your body. During the second wave, we dance more deeply and explore a specific theme. 5Rhythms is a simple movement practice designed to release the dancer that lives in every body regardless of shape, size, age, or experience. While the dance itself is simple, it has the power to catalyze deep healing and creative expression. The primary teaching of this work is: If you put your psyche in motion, it will heal itself. The five rhythms are Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, and Stillness. They come together to create a wave. Classes feature DJ music that is facilitated by the teacher, Sylvie Minot and on occasion, guest instructors. There are no dance steps to follow, but you are guided in breath and movement through the different musical choices. Each rhythm has its own energy and tempo in which you tap into the wisdom of your body, bring awareness to the patterns in yourself and your life, and find your individual expression. No two classes are the same. Any level of fitness, agility and ages are invited to participate. All are welcome and no prior dance training or ability is required. Please note -- for the virtual 5Rhythms class, you don't have to connect via video--you can choose to call in or join by audio only and listen to the class through a headset. Some dancers enjoy going for a walk outdoors while they move to the music. About Tonight's Teacher, Tina Marinic Tina Marinic has always felt she exists in a space between worlds. She was raised by immigrant parents in the heart of the American Midwest. Tina pursued a career in research science, eventually transitioning to interior design. One night she found herself at a High Vibrations Waves class in New York City and thought she found her latest pick-up spot, only to later have the power and depth of this practice sink in during one truly monumental dance. Tina used to see herself as uncommitted and inconsistent, but now understands that she's been simply following her heart this whole time. She currently finds herself in San Francisco, California, embarking on many new adventures, including 5Rhythms teacher training. This training would have finished in May of 2020, but the universe had its own plans. Comments are closed.
