Fluid Strength Movement with Kristen Jackson Banister

5/17/2021

This week, while Sylvie Minot is on vacation, please welcome Kristen Jackson Banister as Syzygy Dance Project’s teacher for this movement class on Zoom from 7:30 - 9 pm PST.

Kristen is an Open Floor International Movement Teacher, certified Syzygy Outreach Facilitator, somatic psychotherapist, and the creator of Flagstaff Freemotion. She sees practices of embodiment through dance as a way of remembering the human connection to the natural world, to one another, and as a path to knowing oneself with greater depth and clarity.

In Kristen’s own words ...
Resilience is a word that has so often been used to blame individuals for systemic problems. Modern language captures us in words: resilient/traumatized; healthy/sick; teacher/student. It denies our emergence — our always becoming, always transforming.

Many of us dance because we find freedom in the felt-sense of being alive.

The body is also where we experience resilience, the subtle, fluid strength that we need to slip through constriction and around obstacles.  I look forward to bringing an exploration of resilience to the dance this Wednesday.
We hope you will join us for this class on Zoom.

With love,

Kristen, Sylvie and the SDP Team

PS. No dance experience needed. Beginners are always welcome. Come join us! You don't have to attend via video--you can choose to listen to the class on your Smartphone. It's another beautiful way to experience our Wednesday classes.

The Wednesday evening class begins at 7:30 PM PST and ends at 9:00 PM PST. The Zoom waiting room will open at 7:20 PM PST.

ABOUT KRISTEN JACKSON BANISTER'S FREE MOTION CLASS

Kristen Jackson Banister

When you use dance to be fully embodied – physically, emotionally, mindfully – it simply means being home for the beautiful ride of being alive. It means we’re present for anything and everything.

To be embodied is to come to your senses. To show up and learn to stay without experience whether it’s good or bad. To feel your power and to make things happen in your world.

When you live an embodied life you are fluid, flexible and free to experience all of the wild and subtle moments that go by.

Some Helpful Guidelines for Kristen's Class:

  • There are no steps to follow.
  • In this movement practice Kristen shifts from speaking with words to speaking with movement. It makes for very creative space.
  • Stay aware. As with any meditation practice, distractions happen – expect them. Just gently bring your attention back to movement.
  • Pace yourself. No matter what the rest of the room is doing, listen to your body. If you relax in the beat, like a swimmer treading water, you’ll refuel.
  • Stretch yourself  Slow down. Speed up. Experiment. Break a habit. Imitate a new step and see how it feels. Create your own remix of others' moves.
  • It’s not about the music. The teacher uses music to catalyze movement. Love it or hate it, how you respond is up to you. Use everything as fuel for your dance.
  • Don't give up.  We all hit patches of fatigue, boredom, shyness, frustration, or discomfort. Even if you can only wiggle a finger or nod your head to the beat, stay with it until something changes. Most often, it will.
  • Enjoy yourself  Excessive seriousness will slow you down.
