Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, Nonviolence is an absolute commitment to the way of love. Love is not emotional bash; it is not empty sentimentalism. It is the active outpouring of one's whole being into the being of another. A twenty-year cycle that began in 2000 will be coming to an end on the Winter Solstice, Monday, December 21. Jupiter and Saturn will form a ‘Great Conjunction’ when they appear closer in the night sky than they have since 1226 A.D. In Native American culture, December begins a season of storytelling and ceremony. I recently came across a series of Native American Winter stories. As we move this week into December, the Moon is in retreat from the sun's illumination. This waning lunar period signals a time for you to connect with the rhythm of your body's harmonic vibration. Writer and feminist, Alice Walker once wrote that ‘thank you' is the best prayer that anyone can say because it expresses extreme gratitude, humility, and understanding. When you dance, your body's movements can take you beyond merely dancing in a specific way to completely letting your body go to that place where a shift of your perspective evolves into a new expressive form. In 1979, I arrived in the US full of hope for freedom, a dream, a vision, and a life where it was all possible. Until last Saturday, I wasn't sure this remained true about America I've grown to love. |
